Welcome to the Forums.... I've done a lot of computer tech work in the past.. First thing to know is...

1. What kind of laptop are you using? PC or Mac?

2. What model is it?

3. How much ram / memory?

4. How much free hard drive space do you have?

5. What recording software were you trying to use?

If you don't know all of these, just answer the ones you can and I'll try and figure out the rest.

Just got an email from blacktooth... I would prefer we post all conversations out here and not as emails as then other people can pitch in and suggest ideas also..

He said..."hows it goin lets see comp. is a toshiba sattelite l455d-s5976, windows 7 premium 32-bit, 2gb ddr2 ram 250 gb hard drive i recently just purchased a m-audio mobilepre preamp/audio interface, because i couldnt get the mic input on the comp to pick up anything and with that it does pick up sound the only thing is that for the ch 1 input it records only the right side then i have to switch inputs to do the left side. also during playback my speakers make a horrible cracking/ popping, the speakers work fine when i listen to music."

I looked up your laptop.. it has a Sempron processor which is a lower end laptop...Still it should be enough to power the mobile pre device.

The specs for the mobile pre are...
Pentium II 300 MHz, 64 MB RAM, Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP
Mac G3 or G4 with native USB support, 64 MB RAM, Mac OS 9.1 or greater or OS X

So your pc is better than those specs, another thing I noticed as the mobilepre is a few years old it only supports USB1.1 with most pcs supporting the much faster USB2.0 spec.

Still.. it shouldnt be lagging while recording. I would make sure you close out of all other applications when you are recording and also run this program on your pc first to clean it up and make sure you dont have any malware on there..its free

If your speakers play fine while playing mp3s but not during playback...Im guessing that its the mobilepre box that isnt recording
the track right..or its recording it with latency gaps..sounds the same as static.

So...

1. Run Malware bytes
2. Visit here and download the newest drivers first... dont just rely on old drivers that were on the cd you got with it.
3. Try recording with no other applications running...just your recording app

if that doesnt work...post your question here:
Might be good to post there anyways about the only recording on one channel issue anyways.

Good luck!

hello :)

what kind of set up are you working with? and what are you trying to record?

initially if it helps this is a kind of quick setup-

1. mixer (mic or otherwise) in some cases these will have a tape out or master out for recording. or if you prefer you could get adapters like a 1/4" Stereo Jack to 1/8" and directly plug your instrument into your comp mic input that way.

2.computer software for processing. i.e. asio is an awesome freeware program for input processing it's also usable with any music/mastering program such as fruity loops or soundforge and many others.

http://asio4all.software.informer.com/

or you could simply use the basic microphone input line on your comp you will get less depth in sound but either way it will work pretty much just the same. additionally in the freeware world from what i know audacity isn't all that bad for recording just kind of limited in controls and mastering.

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

but if you want something that will layer and/or separate tracks with better depth and processing quality you will need to buy something like sony acid software especially for stuff like compiling tracks and general mastering with more tools.

anyway i hope that helped somewhat :D
there are a lot of different ways to go about this especially for different kinds of music
so if you need any other steps i'll be around
