No lolly in the season to be j

Byline: Joe Riley

AVERAGES are the most misleading of statistics - even when they appear to make sense (e.g. women natter their way through 7,000 words a day, while men grunt just 2,000).

Rafa Benitez marching into a Liverpool jewellers to spend six figures on a platinum Rolex for his wife - to celebrate clinching the European Cup - is not typical of present buying in a city where most earn barely pounds 20,000 a year.

But in this season of greed, goodwill and near bankruptcy, what are we t o make of the "average" Christmas spend according to a worldwide Axa survey?

Britain is the most generous giftgiving nation in Europe, at pounds 600 per head. This far exceeds Spain (pounds 432); Italy (pounds 373) and Belgium (pounds 272).

But for once, could we learn something from our Euro-neighbours, who prefer to eat properly throughout the year and save for holidays they can afford?

How very different from Old Blighty, where pride, snobbery and financial incompetence guarantee that hundreds of thousands - perhaps millions - will go around with hang-dog expressions and overdrafts until at least the March pay cheque.

And they're the lucky ones. Others, particularly the old and needy, haven't finished paying for last year's straw packed hamper of cans of Spam, tinned puddings and other useless oddments. THE multi-layered Culture Company seems to be learning from the close media watch on their spending.

Those applying to be music tourism manager (the so-called Beatles promoter), have received a letter from tourism chief Keith Blundell freezing the post.

He writes: "In the light of the appointment of the music coordinator, about whom you may have seen some recent coverage in the local media, it was decided to put the recruitment process on hold."

And Blundell concludes: "I trust Best Dsquared2 Shoes Online you will understand we must be conscious of using public resources wisely, and only recruiting where there is an identified need."

While I'm pleased to play my part in encouraging prudence, a specialist music tourism bod - in a city where pop music is the strongest international brand - could well be thought of as far more significant than some of the jobs already filled. THE debate about yobs having awaydays in the countryside rages on.

I am reminded of a friend who had a lager can smashed into his upper lip in an unprovoked attack.

The wound required nine stitches and has left a permanent scar. The attacker received a pounds 100 fine.

Part of the mitigating circumstances (following a guilty plea supported by a witness statement) was to say how well this yob was doing in controlling his anti-social behaviour. The "treatment" on his anger management course (!!!) had included a trip to the Lake District.

As long as courts 深圳南山搬家公司 are mad enough to take notice of this clap-trap and hand down meaningless fines, the public at large is being duped
